GCash cautions public on “Calamity Assistance” scam exploiting typhoon response initiatives

Beware of Calamity Assistance Scams: SMS spoofing scam using fraudulent SMS messages that falsely claim that they received “Calamity Assistance” in light of recent typhoons and monsoon rains

GCash has issued an urgent alert to all its users regarding an SMS spoofing scam using fraudulent SMS messages that falsely claim that they received “Calamity Assistance” in light of recent typhoons and monsoon rains.

The message prompts recipients to “claim” the aid via embedded links or spoofed QR codes that redirect to malicious sites designed to compromise user accounts.

GCash has repeatedly warned the public against a spoofing scam in which scammers impersonate legitimate institutions such as e-wallets, banks, and service providers. The scammers use illegal devices to send messages containing phishing links, pretending to be from “GCash” to deceive users. When the phishing link is clicked, the scammers can obtain sensitive information to gain unauthorized access to users' accounts. GCash will never send any SMS or text message containing links that ask for users' sensitive information, such as personal details, passwords, MPINs, or OTPs.

“This scam isn’t just opportunistic—it’s engineered for emotional impact,” GCash chief information security officer, Miguel Geronilla, warned. “By invoking the term ‘Calamity Assistance,’ criminals seek to undermine user caution and exploit their vulnerability during disaster recovery.”

To help Filipinos stay vigilant and protected, GCash also strongly advises users not to click on suspicious links, to never share their MPINs and OTPs with anyone, and to report any scam attempts immediately via the GCash Help Center at https://help.gcash.com or message Gigi on the website and type 'I want to report a scam'. Users may also contact the GCash hotline by dialing 2882.

Law enforcement and cybersecurity partners—including the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC)—are actively investigating these incidents, alongside GCash’s internal security team. The company urges users to remain vigilant and to verify any claims through official GCash channels only.

Pasay City rolls out financial aid distribution for students through GCash

The City Government of Pasay has partnered with GCash, the country's leading finance app and largest cashless ecosystem, to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of its financial aid disbursements. This initiative supports the city’s broader digital transformation efforts and aligns with the national mandate for government agencies and LGUs to adopt digital processes.

Initially benefiting student scholars, the partnership will also extend to senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), improving access to vital support for these communities.

The official launch coincided with the unveiling of the new Pasay City EMI Card. The event was attended by 1,500 students from the Pasay City Travel Scholars program, who make up the pilot batch for the digital disbursement initiative. The Pasay City Government collaborated closely with GCash, Globe, and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to ensure a seamless digitalization process for the scholars.

Dahil we want nothing but the best for our PasayeƱos, tayo po ay nakipag-ugnayan sa mga pioneers ng online wallet platforms, ang GCash, na kasama natin in all steps of the way towards this momentous event. Kaya maraming salamat sa GCash, in believing in what we have always advocated for: collaboration in the form of public-private partnerships, na alam nating magbibigay daan sa mas progresibo at mas asensado,” said Pasay City mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano.

The city government aims to expand the use of GCash for other forms of financial aid, targeting a streamlined and effective system that replaces the traditional manual process of cash handling and on-site distribution, ultimately reducing manpower requirements and eliminating long lines for constituents.

“GCash remains fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the government to make ‘Finance for All’ a reality for every Filipino,” said G-Xchange Inc. VP and head of public sector Cleo Santos. “Each partnership with a local government unit brings us closer to a future where digital financial access is the standard, not the exception. With Pasay City joining the ranks of forward-looking LGUs, we’re accelerating a nationwide shift toward more transparent, efficient, and inclusive public service delivery”.

The partnership with the Pasay City Government builds on GCash’s strong track record of empowering local governments in their digital transformation through its 'GCash DigiCities' program. This collaboration marks a significant step in the nationwide shift toward faster, safer, and more transparent government services, enhancing the digitalization of city government operations.

Women Up Top Masterclass of GCash empowers women in tech to lead, grow, and thrive

In a tech industry that’s rapidly becoming more inclusive, empowering women with advanced technical skills and strong mentorship is essential to closing the gender gap in the tech landscape. With access to the right tools, women leaders can thrive individually and help shape a more dynamic and equitable digital future. This was one of the main highlights from the recently held Women Up Top Masterclass launched by GCash, the country’s leading finance app and the largest cashless ecosystem.

30 participants who completed certifications in Agile 101 and AI/ML Workflow and AutoML

The full-day event brought together 30 participants who completed certifications in Agile 101 and AI/ML Workflow and AutoML. Both courses were led by women leaders within the GCash tech teams, reflecting the company’s dedication to internal mentorship and representation.

While significant strides have been made to help improve representation, women in tech still encounter structural challenges, including fewer opportunities for mentorship, limited access to advanced training, and underrepresentation in leadership. By equipping women with essential technical skills and leadership tools, the program underscored GCash’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and future-ready digital workforce.

“Technology doesn’t run on code alone, it runs on people. And that includes data professionals, agile thinkers, machine learning engineers, and especially, women who bring not just skills, but empathy, intuition, and insight into every solution they help build,” GCash Head of Data Governance Sara Venturina shared a reminder that the success of any tech innovation depends as much on people as it does on code.

The Agile 101 session introduced participants to the principles and frameworks of Agile methodology, a foundational capability in any modern tech environment. Meanwhile, the AI/ML Workflow and AutoML session provided hands-on exposure to the machine learning lifecycle, including practical experience with PyCaret, an open-source low-code machine learning library.

Beyond technical instruction, the masterclass also offered a sense of community to the participants. Throughout the day, attendees shared insights, exchanged ideas, and saw firsthand what it means to be supported by peers and mentors who understand the unique challenges women face in tech.

As Venturina said, “We know the tech world hasn’t always made it easy for women. But we also know this: when women are equipped with the right tools and the right community, we can excel and get far in this field.”

With initiatives designed to uplift women and nurture their careers, GCash reinforces its dedication to building a tech ecosystem that champions diversity, equity, and empowerment for the future.

New GCash stories film follows the success story of ‘Bayani ng Barangay’ Rhea Inayan

GCash, the country’s leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, spotlights Rhea Inayan’s journey in their fifth installment of #GCashStories, a campaign that brings its Finance for All mission to life through real, impactful stories of everyday Filipinos.

(L-R) GCash head of communications strategy and GCash Stories campaign lead (since 2023) Lourdes Batac; Bacolod LGU–Local Economic Development and Promotions Office representative Dr. Mae Ferrer-Llamas and Department of Trade and Industry provincial director Engr. Lynna Joy Cardinal; GStories 2025 representative Rhea Inayan; GCash holding company Mynt president and chief executive officer Martha Sazon, G-Xchange Inc. chief operations officer Barbie Dapul, Mynt chief marketing officer Neil Trinidad, and G-Xchange Inc. general manager for B2B Jong Layug

This year's GCash Story launch was a heartfelt celebration in Inayan’s hometown of Bacolod City, where the MSME community gathered to honor her journey of progress and rebuilding.

“Rhea’s journey reminds us why we do what we do at GCash,” said Martha Sazon, president & CEO of Mynt, the holding company of GCash. “As long as there are everyday heroes like Rhea who are ready to rise and help others, we will continue to build products that support them every step of the way,” she added.

“Rhea is proof that when you empower one person, you can uplift an entire community,” added Neil Trinidad, chief marketing officer of Mynt, the holding company of GCash. “She has created spaces for connection, support, and financial empowerment within her own community. Through GCash Stories, we celebrate people like her who show that real progress starts with simple tools, strong values, and the courage to begin again.”

From Local Boutique Owner to Bayani ng Barangay

Rhea Inayan, GCash Pera Outlet Owner at the GStories 2025 Launch

Inayan started in 2008 with Tatti Boutique, which sold imported goods. Her shop grew a loyal following—until her illness and the pandemic forced it to close. Determined to start again, she launched a pop-up shop in City Mall Mandalagan in 2023. She noticed customers asking if they could cash in or pay bills, recognizing a business opportunity. She explored her options before a friend referred her to the GCash Pera Outlet program.

GCash Pera Outlet is a platform designed for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and general trade businesses to facilitate transactions on behalf of their customers. For years, Inayan’s underserved community had little to no options and were forced to deal with high interest rates, timed transactions to bank hours regardless of urgency, and other limitations. With GCash Pera Outlet, they are now able to easily access several financial products such as Cash In, Cash Out, Buy Load, Pay Bills, and Claim Padala.

What began with a ₱10,000 capital and a handwritten signage for “Cash-in, Cash-out, E-load” turned into a full-blown business. Inayan is now one of the top GCash Pera Outlet partners across Visayas, operating four GCash Pera Outlet Accounts. Guided by her personal mission to serve her local community, Inayan built her business around the needs of those around her, seeking to give convenience and aid where she could. By helping their lives move forward by making every day financial transactions easier, she became a trusted pillar in the barangay.

According to Lourdes Batac, GCash head of communications strategy and the GCash Stories Campaign Lead since 2023, Inayan is the perfect choice as the featured hero in the latest short film.

“GCash Stories is more than just a thematic campaign for us,” she said. “Rhea’s journey from a small business owner to now a leading GCash Pera Outlet in Visayas captures everything GCash stands for: progress that starts with people and growth that’s shared with the community.”

Growth fueled by Community

Inayan’s busiest times are payday and weekends, when people line up to send or receive money, pay bills, or buy essentials. Her store hours stretch beyond banks and traditional outlets, providing a lifeline for working customers.

More than numbers, Inayan sees her work as a calling. “Akala ko dati, negosyo lang ang tinatahak kong landas — yung simpleng kita at simpleng tindahan lang,” she shared. “Pero nung naging GCash Pera Outlet partner ako at mas napalapit ako sa komunidad, doon ko nakita na sa bawat transaksyon, may kwento. Ngayon, mas bukas ang puso ko na magbahagi, hindi lang ng serbisyo kundi sa pag-asenso ng aking komunidad.”

Inayan maintains that her success is a product of hard work and keeping true to her business philosophy: Build trust. It’s a belief instilled by her mother, her “biggest supporter,” who taught her to fight fairly, or lumaban nang patas.

Progress Inspires Progress

Beyond her own growth, Inayan continues to mentor and inspire other aspiring GCash Pera Outlets, with at least 10–15 referrals made under her wing. She supports customers across ages, including senior citizens who often ask for help navigating the GCash app. Her vision? To expand to more towns across Negros, build a network of GCash Pera Outlets, and eventually explore franchising opportunities for others to follow her path.

Today, Rhea enjoys quiet mornings in her rest house in Murcia and finds peace through prayer, cooking adobo for friends, and watching her community thrive. She credits her journey to her support system—family, staff, GCash partners, and her suki customers. Her story reminds us all that progress doesn't have to be instant. With GCash, kaya mong simulan ang pag-asenso. Pangarap mo. Simulan mo.

In this event, GCash brings that vision closer to reality with its mission of “Finance for All,” championing financial access that brings progress within reach for every Filipino. The brand is doubling down on its goal through its GCash Pera Outlet program, with hopes to empower even more local business owners, like Inayan.

By becoming a GCash Pera Outlet, GCash seeks to provide ease for MSMEs to operate their business and grow their earnings faster, “Para mas malaki ang balik sa pagod at puhunan,” says Barbie Dapul, chief operations officer G-Xchange, Inc.

The GCash Pera Outlet allows MSMEs to serve as Cash In, Cash Out outlets for their communities along with serving as transaction hubs to Pay BIlls, Buy Load and Pay QR, what’s unique is that now signing up is also made easier, with just one ID and a verified GCash account potential business owners can now sign up to be a GCash Pera Outlet.

With minimum requirements, MSMEs can  sign up to become a GCash Pera Outlet and enjoy extended wallet limits, up to 500k PHP, and have access to free signages and tarps for their visibility. Upon signing up as a GCash Pera Outlet, MSMEs have added up to P40,000 to their monthly earnings!

In helping MSMEs to succeed “Ang gusto naming mangyari ay madala ang financial access at progreso sa bawat Pilipino, kahit saan man siya naroroon. Hindi lang ito tungkol sa digital payments, kasama dito yung pagbibigay ng mga solusyon tulad ng GCash Pera Outlet at GCash for Business na pwedeng gamitin para mas padaliin ang buhay ng mga small business owners” says Jong Layug, G-Xchange Inc. general manager of GCash for Business.

Rizal Medical Center partners with GCash to launch digital payment solutions to enhance patient experience and access to healthcare

State-run Rizal Medical Center (RMC) in Pasig City has partnered with the country’s leading finance app and cashless ecosystem, GCash, to roll out digital payments for hospital bills, aiming to enhance service efficiency and improve the patient experience, making it a first-of-its-kind for any hospital in the Philippines.

(L-R) Rizal Medical Center chief administrative officer for finance Marivilla L. Osorio, CPA-MMHA; medical center chief II Doctor Maria Rica M. Lumague, MD, FPCS, MHA; with GCash vice president and head of public sector Cleo Celeste Santos, and greater manila area public sector regional head Rafael Antonio Tecson

Through the integration of the Scan-to-Pay feature of GCash, RMC patients and their families may now settle fees via mobile phones, reducing reliance on physical cash, cutting waiting time at cashier counters, and promoting safer, contactless transactions. Additionally, eligible users can access GCredit, the built-in credit line of GCash, which provides a flexible payment option during medical emergencies, eliminating the need for traditional promissory notes. Credit eligibility is based on a user’s GScore, a proprietary trust rating generated through app activity.

“This is part of our broader effort to enhance public health service delivery through technology,” said RMC Medical Center Chief Dr. Maria Rica Lumague. “We recognize that waiting in line just to pay can be burdensome, especially for patients in distress or discomfort. Digital payments allow us to eliminate that bottleneck.”

RMC, one of the Department of Health’s leading tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila, said the partnership aligns with national objectives to digitalize government services and improve healthcare accessibility.

“GCash remains committed to financial inclusion across sectors, including healthcare,” said GCash VP and Head for Public Sector Cleo Celeste Santos. “We see this collaboration with Rizal Medical Center as a crucial step in bringing reliable services to those who need them most, especially during medical emergencies.”

The hospital anticipates improvements in operational efficiency, faster transaction processing, and greater user satisfaction through digital adoption. The initiative also supports the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ goal of increasing the share of digital payments to 50% by 2026.

GCash, with millions of registered users, has steadily expanded its presence across key public sector institutions, in line with its vision of building a more financially inclusive Philippines.

DOTr, BSP, DICT, GCash accelerate digital transformation of PH transport system for faster, easier commutes

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and GCash are set to transform the commuting experience at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) with the launch of multiple digital-enabled payment solutions. The Philippines’ leading finance super app is bringing in a world-class technology that eliminates the need for commuters to queue and purchase physical single-journey tickets, in support of the new Philippine National Standard for Automated Fare Collection System of the DOTr.

Transportation secretary Vince Dizon taps his mobile phone to pay for MRT-3 fare during the pilot launch of the open-loop ticketing powered by world-class technology

This initiative positions the Philippines in the same category as its Southeast Asian neighbors, such as Singapore, which have implemented open-loop ticketing systems in their public transportation networks. This ticketing system reduces friction for commuters, allowing them to use mobile wallets and cards to pay for their rides.

The pilot launch was led by DOTr secretary Vince Dizon, and witnessed by BSP monetary board member Walter C. Wassmer, BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan, DICT secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda, and Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) president & CEO Lynette Ortiz. GCash, which will power up the secure, contactless digital transactions across the network, is represented by Mynt president and CEO Martha Sazon (the holding company of GCash) and G-Xchange, Inc. president and CEO Ren-Ren Reyes (the mobile wallet operator of GCash)

GCash holding company Mynt president and CEO Martha Sazon tests the digital payment options powered by GCash at the MRT-3 Ayala station

The newly launched Automated Fare Collection System enables faster, easier journeys for MRT 3 passengers via a tap-in and tap-out method through multiple modes of payment: QR, mobile NFC, and debit/credit cards. All they have to do is open the GCash app, tap the Commute icon to generate a QR code, head to the turnstiles, and tap-in the QR to start their journey, then tap-out the QR to end their journey to pay for their fare. Commuters using android mobile phones, in addition, can pay for their ride using the Tap-to-Pay feature of GCash, which is a contactless payment powered by NFC technology. Those who have GCash cards and/or any Visa or Mastercard cards of other banks, including Landbank prepaid cards, can also directly tap them on select turnstiles as a form of ticket for their fares.

DOTr secretary Vince Dizon, during the launch, invited commuters to use the GCash payments at MRT-3 to experience the convenience of digital payments. "Now, finally we are here. This is just the beginning. We're working on this to equip all turnstile carousels with this option for various payment modes," Dizon said, adding the digital payment solutions will soon be available in Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 and other mass transport systems.

"One of our core mandates is to make payments safer, secure, efficient, reliable, and more accessible to all. Today, those two goals come together. We're making it easier for people to pay for the transport that helps them move safely, securely, and efficiently," BSP monetary board member Walter C. Wassmer said.

To help ensure the success of this initiative, DICT secretary Henry Aguda said they have been working to enhance internet connectivity at MRT-3, allowing commuters to access the GCash app whenever.

"We need to acknowledge the collaboration with MRT-3. Nu’ng nagbigay ng signal si Sec. Vince, inayos namin ang wiring. Pati sa loob ng bagon, eventually, tinatrabaho na namin ‘yan," DICT secretary Aguda added.

(When Sec. Vince gave the signal, we fixed the wiring. Eventually, commuters will have free Wifi inside the trains.)

"Thank you very much for your partnership and for putting together a whole new government approach in so far as making sure that we have the infrastructure, the rails, and the acquired services to make sure that this works for the Filipino people," LandBank president Lynette Ortiz said.

(L-R) GCash holding company Mynt president and CEO Martha Sazon, Department of Transportation secretary Vince Dizon, and Department of Information and Communications Technology secretary Henry Aguda lead the launch of the new digital payment solutions at MRT-3

To mark the landmark rollout, the officials walked through the GCash-powered turnstiles at the MRT-3 One Ayala Station to test the upgrade in commuter flow firsthand.

"We're so proud and excited to finally launch this service in partnership with the government. It has been a joy working with them because they act fast and are very progressive, and we've experienced it firsthand," said Martha Sazon, president & CEO of Mynt, the holding company of GCash.

“Before, people would line up as early as 4:30 am just to buy a ticket. I hope that with this project, we can help them make their commute faster and more convenient,” Sazon added.

This collaboration highlights a concerted effort of relevant government agencies to digitize public services, reduce friction, and increase accessibility — with private sector partners like GCash playing a key role in delivering practical, scalable solutions. With its vast user base and technical agility, GCash brings trusted innovation to frontline mobility through meaningful integration that benefits everyday commuters.

As the proof of concept rollout advances, DOTr and its partners will monitor commuter feedback, assess system improvements, and explore expansion across additional transit lines. The vision is clear: mobility, connectivity, and dignity should move together—leaving no Filipino behind.

Tap, Scan, or Card? GCash Offers 3 Ways to Go Cashless on Your MRT-3 Commute

Every MRT-3 commuter knows the struggle of having to line up for tickets and fumbling for spare change, especially during rush hour. But starting this month, everyday commuting will be made one step faster and easier: you can now use GCash to pay for your MRT-3 trips!

In partnership with the Department of Transportation, GCash has introduced a cashless automated fare collection system at the MRT-3, significantly enhancing the commuter journey. Now, you can pay for your trips in new, easy ways, saving you from long queues and giving you access to a dedicated MRT fast lane. As long as you have a PHP 28 minimum balance in your GCash wallet (the maximum fare for a North Avenue-Taft trip), you're ready to go! The full amount will be deducted upon entry, and your change will be reflected on your GCash wallet upon exit – you can check details on your app’s Transaction History.

Forget cash or exact coins  – your exact fare is seamlessly deducted from your GCash wallet. You can always check your balance and easily top up anytime, because you're using your e-wallet directly. Best of all, your phone with the GCash app or GCash Visa Card is all you need!

Here are new, easy ways you can use GCash at the MRT-3:

Tap to Pay using your phone

Using an NFC-enabled Android phone? Great news! Your device is now your ticket for a seamless entry and exit pass.

To get started, GCash Tap to Pay is a quick, one-time activation:

  1. Simply tap Settings in your GCash app.

  2. Turn on the NFC feature.

  3. Log in to your GCash account.

  4. Select Tap to Pay and agree to the Terms & Conditions.

Once activated, paying for your MRT-3 ride is just two taps away. Just log in and open your GCash app, then tap your phone on the turnstile upon entry to proceed to the platform.

Scan your GCash Commute QR

No NFC for tapping? No worries! You can still enjoy the convenience of cashless commuting by generating a Commute QR code on your GCash app, serving as your digital ticket without the need to input any station details.

Here's how easy it is:

  1. At the start of the trip, tap Commute on the GCash app.

  2. Click Generate QR. You may download the QR or take a screenshot.

  3. At the MRT fast lane, position your phone towards the scanner.

  4. Once scanned, you're all set to proceed to the train platform.

Upon exit, just scan the same QR code again, and the exact fare will be automatically deducted from your account. For Globe and TM users, this feature works even without mobile data!

Tap your GCash Visa Card

Spotty signal, running out of battery, or simply love using a card? You can still breeze through your MRT-3 ride using your GCash Visa Card. Just like the current card ticketing system, you can simply tap your card upon entry and again upon exit. What's great about the GCash Visa Card is that it's linked to your GCash wallet for a leveled-up experience! No need to line up to load, use it to pay not just for MRT rides but also shopping in millions of online and offline stores, and withdraw from your GCash in any ATM for as low as P10. Cards are on soft launch – temporarily, your change will be credited to your GCash 24 hours after your MRT trip. See the details on your app’s Transaction History.

To use this convenient feature, order your GCash Visa Card on the app, and when you receive it, make sure to link it to your GCash account:

  1. Tap 'Cards' in the GCash app to order or link your GCash Visa Card.

  2. To order – Select ‘Order a Card,’ then input your delivery address and pay P250. It will be delivered to you in 7-10 days.

  3. To link – Select 'Link my Card,' then input the One-Time Pin (OTP) and submit.

  4. Enter the last 4 digits of your card and your virtual account number found at the back then submit.

With new convenient ways to pay at the MRT-3 station, your everyday commute just got a significant upgrade. Whether you tap, scan, or use your card, you are not just skipping one extra line and saving yourself time, but also experiencing a global, innovative way to pay with GCash!
